Cameroon (Project design, QA/QC of geo-data acquisition)

In 2012 IGS, trading as BGS International (BGSI) was contracted by the Cameroon Government via PRECASEM (Projet de renforcement des Capacités dans le Secteur Minier) to assist them in an effort to strengthen the mining sector. The project was funded by the World Bank. The objectives of this project were:

  • To identify important zones of mineralization and to stimulate interest by potential investors.
  • To formulate practical recommendations for geological mapping and geo-data acquisition.
  • To prepare the technical specifications for mapping and the acquisition of geo-data.
  • To prepare Terms of Reference for technical assistance to PRECASEM.
  • To prepare conditions for the supervision of such geological services.

Subsequently, IGS in partnership with the Council for Geoscience,  South Africa, was awarded  a World Bank tender for the supervision of  a geological data acquisition project in the northern part of Cameroon. The project covered three main subprojects:

  • Geological mapping of the northern part of Cameroon on a scale of 1 : 200,000.
  • Stream sediment sampling of the northern part of Cameroon.
  • The establishment of an ArcGIS geological database to host al the acquired geo-data.

This project started in 2015 and was completed in 2018.

In a second phase of the project, IGS was appointed by PRECASEM to also supervise continuation of the geological data acquisition project in the southern part of Cameroon from 2019 to 2021. The components of the second phase included the following:

  • Geological mapping of the southern part of Cameroon on a scale of 1 : 200,000.
  • Geochemical exploration of the southern part of Cameroon.
  • Compilation of a 1 : 500,000 scale geological map of Cameroon
  • Compilation of industrial mineral resources of Cameroon

Both phases of the Cameroon project were executed by a consortium consisting of BRGM (French Geological Survey) GTK (Geological Survey of Finland) and BEIG3.
