IGS, previously operating as BGSI in Afghanistan, have been working in Afghanistan from 2014-17 as part of the DFID-funded Extractive Sector Support Programme (ESSP). This programme aimed to support the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) and the Afghan Geological Survey (AGS) through a variety of capacity-building projects designed to increase the capability of local Afghan staff, as well as enhancing the facilities of these institutions.
IGS (BGSI) had three projects as part of ESSP:
- Equipping a brand new Construction Materials Testing Laboratory, including training of staff, at the AGS
- A mining-environmental geology project at the AGS designed to increase understanding of mining-related environmental issues in Afghanistan
- Promoting the mineral (and petroleum) resources of Afghanistan and increasing capability at the MoMP
ESSP formally ended on 30th September 2017 and was graded overall by DFID as ‘A’.
