Prospectivity Analysis

Quantitative assessment of geological risk otherwise known as prospectivity modelling/analysis or potential mapping has been around since the early 1990’s.

The aim of prospectivity analysis is to de-risk exploration decision making using large geospatial datasets and the latest mineral systems knowledge. This allows the quantitative assessment of geology, geochemistry and geophysical data to identify areas of economic mineral potential within an area, region or country.

Techniques employed for this analysis include a manual GIS approach and more statistical methods such as Weights of Evidence, Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks.

IGS has developed a new technique using Semantic Technology which makes up the Xplore Analysis System and lies behind the Xplore Analysis Tool.

Our system is new to the geology sector but the methodology is widely used in the pharmaceutical and financials sectors utilising Semantic Technology a form of Artificial Intelligence.  Semantic technology allows the system to understand the data it holds and allows users to extract knowledge from very large datasets quickly.

This allows us/the system to analysis geological data without statistics, training data or assigning empirical weights. So very different from using weight of evidence, fuzzy logic or neural networks.

Using semantics we can directly apply geological knowledge to large datasets, in our case in the form of over 50 mineral deposit models we have coded in SPARQL. A single deposit model would be approximately 500 lines of code and around 80 criteria. These models are a compilation of the USGS, British Columbia and Geoscience Australia deposit models but are very flexible and rules can be amended easily. So the geologist using the system can focus on building the best mineral deposit to apply to a dataset and not on statistical/computing techniques.

Our outputs are also very transparent, with the areas identified clearly attributed with if the geological criteria is met Yes/No/Present/Not Present.

Our Data inputs must include;

  • Geology Polygons (the higher resolution the better)
  • However the analysis is much improved with;
  • Geochemistry (Soil, rockchip, stream, lakes)
  • Geological Structures
  • Interpreted Geophysics (Lineaments, contours, major structures, mag/gav anomalies etc)

We do not use any mineral/deposit occurrence data as input to our analysis, we use this only to validate the results that we have identified all areas we should have – or if not, we can understand what data is missing that is causing that area not to be ranked as prospective. Similar to a person we don’t want to bias the system in looking where there are already known occurrence but rely on the overall understanding of geology it’s been given – the same as a geologist.

It’s also a very quick process, once the data is in the right format which can take a few days our analysis the entire Western Australia dataset took <2 hours.

We offer a consultancy service but like working with government partners to prepare products for mineral promotion with revenue sharing of produced products.
