Afghan project recognised for achievements

IGS, previously operating as BGSI in Afghanistan, have been working in Afghanistan from 2014-17 as part of the DFID-funded Extractive Sector Support Programme (ESSP). This programme aimed to support the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) and the Afghan Geological Survey (AGS) through a variety of capacity-building projects designed to increase the capability of local Afghan staff, as well as enhancing the facilities of these institutions.

IGS (BGSI) had three projects as part of ESSP:

  1. Equipping a brand new Construction Materials Testing Laboratory, including training of staff, at the AGS
  2. A mining-environmental geology project at the AGS designed to increase understanding of mining-related environmental issues in Afghanistan
  3. Promoting the mineral (and petroleum) resources of Afghanistan and increasing capability at the MoMP

ESSP formally ended on 30th September 2017 and was graded overall by DFID as ‘A’.
